Music School at UNO
Latin origin of “anticipation”, a fitting title for this work which frames the entrance to the Concert Hall. Musically, it is “the introduction in a composition of part of a chord which is about to follow in full”. Visually, it lends anticipation to the experience as it draws its dynamic form from the Concert Hall’s own pipe organ with the materials reflecting those of musical instruments, arranged here in the tradition of the symphony orchestra.
Strauss Performing Arts Center
Anticipare, located at the entrance of the Concert hall, visually lends anticipation to upcoming musical experiences. The piece draws its dynamic form from the Concert Hall's pipe organ with materials reflecting those of musical instruments, arranged in the tradition of the symphony orchestra. Musically, the latin word "Anticipare" translates to "the introduction in a composition of part of a chord which is about to follow in full."

Intervallum by Raylene Gorum
Intervallum breaks down an octave into colorful intervals. The rhythm of the colored patterns lends motion and interpretations to the piece, allowing background colors to migrate through the piece, like companion tones in music. An interval is simply described as “the difference in pitch between two musical sounds” but originates from the Latin “intervallum” - the space between ramparts. This piece also spans the spatial chasm in the hallway with a portion installed along the glass wall above.
Strauss Performing Arts Center mural
Intervallum was also inspired by the experience of driving across the state..the colors transitioning from daybreak, to sunset and evening motifs.
Vinyl. 15' x 38'. Completed 2019.
Parts of an octave
Each color represents a different part of an octave - which can also be described as "Do Re Me" or Perfect fifths, minor fourths, etc or their ratio signatures (4:3, 5:3, 9:8, 10:9...)
View from above
The piece is perhaps best viewed from upstairs, near the musician's practice rooms. It is on this glass wall upstairs that I have placed a legend of sorts.
Here music students and passersby find a diagram of the work with the ratios of the intervals called out on withing the blue line work.

The diagram I included on glass above traces the intervals used in the art work beyond and includes their ratio signatures (visible discretely in the line work).

"Portrait of Oshun" depicts the Goddess of Water, Fertility and Love as an elemental water bearing force. The dancing "clouds" were lit from within the cathedral and without to create a crepuscular ray effect.

Star Sailor at Onizuka Crossing
Ellison Onizuka was a Japanese American astronaut from Kealakekua, Hawaii who died in the destruction of the Space Shuttle Challenger on January 28, 1986. This art piece is named “Star Sailor” (from the roots of the word ‘astronaut’) to pay homage to Ellison Onizuka's love of deep sea fishing, his home state of Hawaii, and his achievements with NASA. This piece explores the parallel harmonies of the deep sea and deep space through Col. Onizuka’s relationship to them.
Hōkūleʻa detail
Star Sailor celebrates the long history of braveHawaiian pioneers with a depiction of the Hōkūleʻa (a voyaging canoe built to revive the centuries-old tradition of Polynesian exploration) ready for lift-off across a rainbow horizon (for Hawaii, the Rainbow State).
